EDITOR’S NOTE: A word of caution on the latest figures for COVID-19 in South Africa from the NDoH, as the total cases and deaths for the North West and Mpumalanga are the same on the daily infographic that is shared by the department.

Numbers have not been corrected at the time of writing, so we have chosen to pull statistics from the NICD as well, to provide as accurate a report as possible.

We are now halfway through the second month of 2022, but the impact of COVID-19 in South Africa still lingers.

In fact, we are still to fully shake off the effects of the fourth wave of infections, as newly recorded daily figures show that numbers are yet to die down to reasonable levels.

To that end, this week we have seen the number of fatalities surge over the past two days, but the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) shows that things appear to levelling out to some degree.

On that front, the past 24 hours has seen 2 364 new cases recorded, as the total number of infections to date climbs to 3 645 269. As for fatalities, the NDoH says 181 have been reported, but no word on additions as a result of the ongoing audit process.

The death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has risen to 97 431 as a result.

Looking at the other key figures in the report, the recovery rate remains at 96.3 percent while 3 511 001 recoveries have been recorded so far. Added to this is more than 22.72 million tests having been conducted to date.

Shifting to the vaccine rollout, turnout remains less than satisfactory as 68 662 jabs have been administered in the past 24 hours. As of 17:00 on 15th February 2022, a total of 30 701 325 vaccines have been administered.
