Starting today PlayStation gamers can connect their PSN account to Discord to showcase what games they are playing. To be clear, that’s all PlayStation users can do with Discord right now, show people what you’re playing.

We’re somewhat taken aback by this news because it’s quite literally the bare minimum when it comes to integration between the two platforms. That having been said, this now puts Xbox and PlayStation on par as regards how well integrated Discord is.

That is to say, not very well integrated at all.

What makes us particularly sour is the fact that Sony Interactive Entertainment made a very big song and dance about its partnership with Discord in 2021. The publisher even made a “minority investment” in Discord during its Series H funding.

“Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together,” said president and chief executive officer at SIE, Jim Ryan.

We’re hopeful that voice communication and other Discord features will be integrated into the PlayStation ecosystem soon but for now, you can showcase what game you’re playing on Discord. That is definitely something we suppose.

To link your Discord account to your PSN account open up Discord and head to User Settings. From there click Connections and the tap the PlayStation icon. You will then be asked to sign-in to your PlayStation account via a pop-up window.

Once connected, two new options will appear for the PSN account in Discord namely:

• “Display on Profile and
• Display PlayStation Network as your status.”

You will need to enable both to showcase your PlayStation activity on Discord.

As we mentioned, this really is the bare minimum as far as Discord integration goes. We’re sure that this is a complex situation given how different every platform is we were really hoping for more than being able to show our friends what games we’re playing.

Thankfully Discord is available as a browser app and a smartphone app for Android and Apple iOS so console gamers who want to crossplay with their PC friends have some options.
