Elden Ring has been patched before even launching

Tomorrow is the day: on 25th February 2022 the latest FromSoftware game Elden Ring finally launches, but before then there’s a new patch.

Yes in a bit of an odd move the game has already received an update that is said to improve game stability with the following highlights:

  • Improved player controls
  • Addition and adjustment of BGM
  • Text adjustments
  • Balance adjustments
  • NPC event fixes and adjustments
  • Fixed frame rate drops under certain conditions
  • Fixed text bug in some languages
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the Xbox wireless headset from working properly

Yesterday the review embargo for the game broke and many content creators released their scores for Elden Ring. We have to wonder if this patch is in response to those reviews or continued internal QA testing from the developer.

Players who are about to dive into the game are instructed to download this update before they continue playing, and those with early access should do the same.

“This patch is also available in the Digital Art Book & Soundtrack included in the Digital Deluxe Edition. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but please apply the update file to this as well before starting the game,” the announcement continues.

Looking at the list we’re happy to see improvements to player controls, as vague as that is. Elden Ring is shaping up to be one of the most mechanically complex games from FromSoftware so anything to make control better is welcome.

Hopefully some of that control updating is to the mouse and keyboard controls for the game. Soulslike games are notorious for being rather terrible to play on mouse and keyboard making a gamepad mandatory for PC players. Elden Ring is already recommended by some for controllers only so maybe there’s been a bone thrown to those who refuse to give up the good old faithful PC setup.
