itch.io the latest to call NFTs a scam

While most of us were trying to relax on Sunday ahead of starting work again, itch.io instead chose violence and has released a statement outright calling NFTs a scam.

itch.io is a marketplace focused on smaller games that gives both developers and customers a lot of freedom in how the software is sold and bought. The site is something of a haven for game makers who just want to create and distribute their work without the politics and popularity contests of some other platforms.

The full comment about NFTs from itch.io are in the embedded tweets below split across four short messages. We had a chuckle at the bluntness of the entire thing and the “how can you be so dense?” end complete with a crying emoji.

As those who are involved in NFTs and other cryptocurrency projects are some of the most vocal on the internet, the tweets have comments turned off which we think is for the best.

That being said the public is still free to talk to themselves by quote retweeting the messages and adding their own messages.

At the time of writing the top level tweet has 4 755 quote retweets. Reading through some of them and the comments are, ah, interesting. There’s a lot of opposing views there and even more vitriol so read it at your own detriment.

It seems like every other day a new organisation or person of note is taking up a stance on NFTs. Just today the RIAA called HitPiece – a music NFT website of dubious legality – a “complete sham“.

Back in the world of videogames and the biggest name in the PC space, Valve, made a stance by blocking blockchain games on Steam while Epic Games is seemingly embracing it.
