Matric exam rewrite registration extended yet again

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is giving students even more time to register for Matric exam rewrites happening in May / June 2022 as it issues yet another extension to the registration dates.

The new date is now 21st February. Previously this date was 18th February, and before  that it was 13th February.

This latest extension does make sense when you consider that 18th February is a Friday. Registration for these rewrites can be done at education district offices in person or online here.

While these offices will not be accessible over the weekend, the new date means that students wanting to register online can still do so over Saturday and Sunday.

In the announcement for the latest new date the DBE also points out which Matric candidates may register. Despite the long list you see below the motivation to simply obtain better marks is good enough to qualify in the eyes of the DBE:

  • “All candidates that registered for the October/November examination, as from 2008 may register for the 2022 May/June examination.
  • Candidates may only register for subject/s for which they were previously registered in a previous October/November examination.
  • Candidates who register for the 2022 May/June examination, must have completed their SBA tasks. Practical Assessment Tasks and the Language Oral tasks in a previous October/November examination.
  • Candidates who were absent with a valid reason (ill-health, death in the immediate family or other special reasons) from one or more question papers. may register for the 2022 May/June examination. Documentary proof substantiating reasons for the absenteeism, must be submitted to the school principal or at the office, where the registration form is submitted.
  • Candidates who want to improve their overall achievement status, or only want to improve their achievement or non-achievement in a specific subject, may register for the 2022 May/June examination.
  • In the case where a candidate was absent for one or more question papers in the October/November examination with a valid reason, the candidate must write all the question papers in the 2022 May/June examination.
  • In a case where an irregularity is being investigated, provisional enrolment for the 2022 May/June examination may be granted to the candidate concerned, pending the outcome of the investigation.
  • NSC candidates may only register manually at a district office or at the school where they previously wrote the examination.”

While the focus of these rewrites falls on the Matrics for the National Senior Certificate, the rewrites also apply to those seeking a Senior Certificate.

This has its own criteria for registration which can be found here, and registration can also be done online here or at the aforementioned physical offices.
