Bungie doesn’t want Destiny 2 played on Valve’s Steam Deck

As players enjoy the launch of the latest expansion of Destiny 2 in The Witch Queen, for those who intend on playing the game on Valve’s Steam Deck, Bungie has some advice – don’t.

In an update to its help page, Bungie didn’t just say that Destiny 2 is not compatible with the handheld game console, but that players could be banned for trying to bypass Destiny 2’s incompatibility.

“Destiny 2 is not supported for play on the Steam Deck or on any system utilizing Steam Play’s Proton unless Windows is installed and running. Players who attempt to launch Destiny 2 on the Steam Deck through SteamOS or Proton will be unable to enter the game and will be returned to their game library after a short time,” writes Bungie.

“Players who attempt to bypass Destiny 2 incompatibility will be met with a game ban,” the developer added.

Why Bungie is so averse to the Steam Deck is unclear. As The Verge points out, Steam Deck and Proton support anti-cheat solutions such as Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye.

While The Verge was able to get Destiny 2 running on a Steam Deck, it was running it via Stadia so it’s a bit of a hack job.

South Africans of course can’t purchase a Steam Deck locally without importing the console so this doesn’t really matter at this stage. That having been said, should the Steam Deck arrive on our shores don’t use it try to play Destiny 2 lest you want to be banned.
