Epic Games is set to acquire Bandcamp

For people who prefer owning their music, Bandcamp is one of the best ways to purchase music while supporting the artist directly.

This is because artists on Bandcamp receive an average of 82 percent of every sale making it a more viable alternative to streaming for artists, especially smaller artists.

It’s a wonderful solution and it’s no wonder that Fornite maker Epic Games has announced it will be acquiring the music marketplace.

“Bandcamp has built an incredible community and business where up and coming artists can succeed thanks to the direct support of their fans, with one of the best revenue models and terms in music. This aligns closely with Epic’s approach to supporting creators across all media and enabling them to connect directly with their fans,” vice president and general manager of the Epic Games Store, Steve Allison said in a press statement.

Bandcamp will continue to operate as a standalone marketplace so there doesn’t appear to be integration with the Epic Games Store, at least not in the near future. Co-founder and chief executive officer at Bandcamp, Ethan Diamon, went on to say that Bandcamp Fridays, which is a great way to highlight smaller, up and coming artists, will also continue.

“However, behind the scenes we’re working with Epic to expand internationally and push development forward across Bandcamp, from basics like our album pages, mobile apps, merch tools, payment system, and search and discovery features, to newer initiatives like our vinyl pressing and live streaming services,” Diamond said.

This is good news for both companies. Bandcamp gets the backing it needs to expand because its now a part of Epic Games, and Epic Games gets to add yet another creator-friendly firm to its stack.

Neither firm has said how much the acquisition was worth or when the acquisition is expected to be finalised.
