Failing further – Eskom announces Stage 4 loadshedding for the rest of the week

What was meant to an overnight instance of loadshedding became two days of loadshedding and now things have degraded even further.

On Wednesday morning Eskom announced that due to further failures of generation units, Stage 4 loadshedding would need to be implemented from 09:00 Wednesday until 05:00 on Friday. At 05:00 on Friday loadshedding won’t end, but will instead move to Stage 2 and continue at that stage until Monday morning at 05:00.

“Overnight a unit each at Kendal, Duvha, Camden and Kusile power stations tripped. Since then we have returned four units to service. However, these units still need to ramp up to full output, which necessitates a high usage of emergency generation reserves today. This being the fourth day of extremely high diesel usage, the emergency reserves are being depleted faster than can be replenished,” Eskom wrote in a power alert.

Total breakdowns across Eskom’s system amount to 15 439MW while maintenance means that 5 505MW of generation capacity is unavailable.

As always, we advise checking out the Eskom loadshedding site and Eskomsepush on mobile to keep up to date with what times your area will be affected. Remember, if your power remains off for longer than scheduled there is likely a fault and it needs to be reported.
