Nespresso customer data exposed through third-party supplier

As you sit down to enjoy your cup of coffee this morning you may scroll through your inbox and find an alarming email from Nespresso.

Late on Monday evening Nespresso’s distributor in South Africa, Top Coffee, emailed South African customers alerting them to the possibility that some of their personal data may have been exposed. This data is limited to customer names, phone numbers and email addresses, but this could still give cybercriminals ample information to use in a spearphishing scheme.

The email sent to Nespresso customers.

The data was exposed via a third-party supplier that handle’s Nespresso’s email needs.

According to a Nespresso customer representative no financial information was exposed and the issue where data was exposed was addressed immediately.

We do need to commend Nespresso here. The exposed data was detected on 27th February and according to a customer representative, the Information Regulator of South Africa was informed of the exposed data. Nestle has also been informed.

“We sincerely regret this unfortunate situation. We take our obligation to safeguard your personal data very seriously and are taking all necessary actions to help prevent this type of incident from reoccurring,” Nespresso told customers.

Customers with concerns should contact the Nespresso call centre on 080 063 7773 and select option four.

While this breach is not as severe as some we’ve seen, it does still present a risk. As such, if you are a Nespresso customer, be wary of potential phishing or spearphishing attempts in future.
