Path of Exile gets controller beta, but only on Steam

As Diablo Immortal and Diablo 4 flounder at the embattled Activision Blizzard, Path of Exile continues to truck along and now brings beta controller support to the PC version of the game, albeit only on Steam.

“Since Path of Exile was launched on Xbox and PlayStation several years ago, we’ve been keen to bring controller support to the PC version. In the near future, we’ll deploy the 3.17.3 Patch which introduces a Beta version of controller support,” an announcement reads.

“To access this feature, connect a game controller to your PC, launch Path of Exile and go to the Input Options panel. Change the Input Method option to ‘Gamepad (Beta)’. It should take effect without you having to relaunch Path of Exile. Please note that the feature is currently unavailable on Epic and macOS clients.”

Those on the other PC platforms and / or those who don’t like to explore features until they’re further developed can look forward to the launch of the 3.18 expansion of the game which should launch the full version of controller support and, hopefully, not just on Steam.

Path of Exile developer and publisher Grinding Gear Games asks that those trying out the new controller options report any issues they’re having on the Bug Reports forum here.

We brought up Diablo at the start of the story not just because it’s the granddaddy and the gold example of action RPGs, but because we still have fond memories of the original PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 console port of Diablo 3. The translation to controller for those ports fundamentally changed how that game plays for the better in our opinion, with the dodge roll giving it a distinctly more tactile feel compared to PC.

The experience still holds up many years alter as we replayed the game when it launched on Nintendo Switch.

Back to Path of Exile and a very different kind of handheld, Grinding Gear Games is also looking for feedback on Valve’s latest hardware.

“Also, if you have a Steam Deck console, please test out Path of Exile after 3.17.3 has been released and let us know how well it works!” the company adds.
