Ryzen’s stuttering problem could only have a fix in May

PC users running AMD’s Ryzen processors may have noticed a hitch in the processor’s giddy up and AMD seems to have finally addressed the problem.

The issue appears to be with how the Firmware Trusted Platform Module (fTPM) and SPI flash memory interact.

“AMD has determined that select AMD Ryzen system configurations may intermittently perform extended fTPM-related memory transactions in SPI flash memory (“SPIROM”) located on the motherboard, which can lead to temporary pauses in system interactivity or responsiveness until the transaction is concluded,” the tech maker wrote on its support page.

The problem appears as stuttering and while its not for an extended duration – in our experience it’s roughly one to two seconds at most twice a day – it is annoying.

The good news is that a fix is on the way. The bad news is that the fix needs to be implemented by motherboard manufacturers and as a result, the fix will likely only start appearing in May. Of course, AMD can’t just issue a firmware fix as its fix may not play nice with the firmware of the motherboard being used.

“AMD expects that flashable customer sBIOS files to be available starting in early May, 2022. Exact BIOS availability timing for a specific motherboard depends on the testing and integration schedule of your manufacturer. Flashable updates for motherboards will be based on AMD AGESA 1207 (or newer),” the manufacturer said.

AMD has detailed a workaround for users who can’t stand or can’t afford the interruptions this problem causes which can be found over on the support page.

As we mentioned, this problem is more of an annoyance than anything else and hopefully motherboard manufacturers can get this fix out sooner rather than later. We really don’t want to be in a situation where new AMD Ryzen 7000 chips arrive and we’re still dealing with problems that appeared in previous generations.
