Spotify has purchased the naming rights to the iconic FC Barcelona football stadium

There are a handful of football stadiums that are iconic, with their names alone evoking something special – Anfield, Old Trafford, Soccer City, Bernabeu. The Camp Nou, which FC Barcelona call home is one such stadium, but now that name is set to change.

This as Spotify has purchased the naming rights to the stadium and will be calling it the rather unimaginative Spotify Camp Nou.

“The partnership reached by Barça and Spotify is a first-of-its-kind for the club in bringing the worlds of Music and Football together, giving a global stage to players and artists at the Spotify Camp Nou Stadium, and building new opportunities to connect artists and players with fans around the world,” noted FC Barcelona in an official statement.

“Furthermore, FC Barcelona and Spotify will be working to use the Club’s in-stadium promotional surfaces to present and amplify the work of artists to the Blaugrana’s global TV audience. With the development of Espai Barça, Spotify is joining the club in the next chapter of its history,” it added.

No specific figure for the deal has been shared by FC Barcelona, but it is believed to be in the region of $310 million for an unknown period of time. This money will likely be put towards consolidating the sizeable debt that the club has, so do not expect to see a myriad of signings following this announcement.

While we have an idea as to why FC Barcelona has agreed to this partnership, for Spotify’s part, it may be less well known, but its owner Daniel Ek recently put in a bid to purchase Arsenal FC, where he was swiftly rejected.

All due respect to Gooners, but FC Barcelona is definitely a bigger name, and while it may not own the club, getting the Spotify name on such an iconic stadium is certainly a statement of intent.

How local Catalan fans will feel about sitting inside the Spotify Camp Nou, remains to be seen, but we’re guessing a financially stable club that is winning trophies by playing attractive football is a more pressing concern.
