Yesterday LEGO revealed an amazing new set based on the Back to the Future DeLorean and now, today, we know how much it will cost in South Africa and when it will be available locally.
Like many parts of the world the set will be available from 1st April. The South African pricing is set at R2 999.00.
To see how our local pricing stacks up against the rest of the world, here are the recommend retail prices from other regions and their conversions into Rands using the exchange at the time of writing:
- US$169.99 ≈ R2 541.17
- AU$269.99 ≈ R2 979.64
- CA$219.99 ≈ R2 606.53
- €169.99 ≈ R2 814.30
- £149.99 ≈ R2 947.82
As we can see the South African price is more or less in line with those in other countries with a small bump up in price which we usually expect.
When looking at those prices, however, it’s worth remembering that some territories don’t include taxes in the RRP which is then added at checkout. This is especially true for the USA as its prices always look the lowest.
Regardless of where you live, you are getting 1 872 pieces that build a display model that’s rather large at 35 X 19 X 12 centimetres (depth X width X height).
The model can also be built one of three ways to reflect the trilogy of movies with the base car, the flying version with folded wheels and the old West variant also available.
Because only one can be built at any time those who really want to display all three at once will need to actually buy three copies of the set. Spending around R9 000 on LEGO isn’t something we necessarily recommend, but man it would look great, wouldn’t it?

South Africans who want to buy one (or three) can find it listed on the official, local LEGO store website already. While they don’t have listings yet the LEGO specialised retailers Importatoy and Kiddiwinks are also worth checking out closer to the 1st April release.
