Destiny 2’s Guardian Games 2022 has a new spin

Next week Tuesday, Bungie’s annual in-game event for Destiny 2 known as Guardian Games, kicks off. This event sees players competing on a class basis for bragging rights over the course of the next year.

Last year, Hunter’s took gold and the year before Titans won out.

While there are returning staples to the event such as medals which contribute to a grand total for each class. The premise is simple, the class that collects the most medals wins the games and has their victory displayed on a statue in The Tower.

This year Bungie is once again using Contender Cards to drive players into certain activities in order to earn medals. The higher the challenge of an activity, the higher the tier of medal will be.

This means that raids, Dungeons, Competitive PvP and PsiOps Battleground on higher difficulty will reward higher-tier Platinum medals. Playlist activities such as Gambit, Crucible Quickplay Vanguard Ops and Throne World activities will reward Gold medals.

A new entry in the activity is Strike Scoring. In 2021 Bungie introduced a Strike playlist specifically for Guardian Games which matched players of the same class. For 2022 Strike Scoring is being added but only for this playlist or rather playlists.

As Bungie explained there will be a Training Playlist and a Competitive Playlist and when you enter these playlists matters.

Training playlist bonuses will be active on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday where players earn a practice score and buffs that can be used in the Vanguard Ops playlist. The Competitive Playlist bonuses are active on – you guessed it – Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday where the rewards and buffs are said to be more exciting.

But what about scoring because this has been a contentious matter in the past. To that end Bungie is sticking with a tried and tested method.

“Last year’s games included a 10 percent ‘catch-up’ buff that allowed for each class to have a fighting chance, regardless of how many players are in that class pool. This was to encourage players to feel like they have equal footing regarding competition, and it seemed to work out pretty well in the end,” Bungie explained in a blog post.

“But there is always room to make improvements, so this year, each team’s score multiplier will start with whatever value they ended on during last year’s festivities. Titans, having placed 3rd the most days, will have the largest boost. Warlocks, with the second most days in 3rd place, will get a moderate boost. Hunters, having placed 3rd the least number of times, will get the smallest boost. A little added bonus includes a minor 4 percent bump to their multiplier for the class in second place, with a 10 percent bump for those in third place,” it added.

As for rewards, the Exotic Heir Apparent as well as its catalyst will once again be up for grabs, but a new Hakke Sub-Machine Gun called The Title. The Title is Void for all those Void 3.0 builds and features the Origin Perk Classy Contender which grants class ability energy on final blows. An exclusive emblem is also on offer for the top 10 percent of players during the games.

Essentially the event boils down to running a Warlock for the entirety of the event, completing Contender Cards and bounties in which ever activity you prefer. Of course we’re kidding, run whichever class you want and have a bit of fun.

Guardian Games runs from 3rd May to 24th May in Destiny 2 and is free to all players.
