Fortnite raises R2 Billion for Ukraine

Epic Games has revealed just how much money it has generated for humanitarian aid in Ukraine through Fortnite and the amount is rather astounding.

The final figure is $144 million and, at the time of publication, that’s more than R2 billion. And yes, that’s billion with a “b”.

As a recap Epic Games announced that, between 20th March and 3rd April, all the proceeds from real money purchases made in Fortnite would be donated to various organisations working to help the humanitarian crisis currently happening in Ukraine.

This was also backed up by Microsoft who similarly donated all the net proceeds from Fortnite purchases made on the Microsoft Store.

Over the course of this happening we were provided news of its milestones with $50 million and $70 million previous revealed.

With the 3rd April deadline come and gone this past weekend the final $144 million figure has now been released.

Reading through the FAQ of this process here this endeavour becomes even more impressive outside of the Dollars and cents. Several generous decisions were made to better affect the situation, such as the Support-A-Creator programme users still receiving their cut directly paid for by Epic and the company sending money through as soon as possible instead of waiting for the end of the donation period.

Both Fortnite and the company behind it receives its fair share of lashes for various reasons as one of the biggest games in the world, but we really have to admire this entire idea, how well it was rolled out and just how much money will be going to Ukraine.

The organisations Epic Games partnered with to donate this money include The UNHCR Refugee AgencyUN World Food ProgrammeUNICEF and Direct Relief. All of them are still also taking direct donations so you can still contribute independently if you’d like.
