That didn’t last long – CNN+ will be shuttered on 30th April

Here is something we hope more companies learn – just because you can launch a streaming service, doesn’t mean you should.

The company that is learning this lesson is CNN which has revealed that its streaming service CNN+ will be shut down on 30th April.

Given the service only launched a month ago this decision to shutter the service so soon seems odd. However, as CNN revealed in its own report, the shuttering of CNN+ is a decision made by new management. Earlier in April WarnerMedia merged with Discovery to form Warner Bros. Discovery and the new owners aren’t keen on a news streaming service.

“In a complex streaming market, consumers want simplicity and an all-in service which provides a better experience and more value than stand-alone offerings, and, for the company, a more sustainable business model to drive our future investments in great journalism and storytelling,” president and chief executive officer of Discovery Streaming and International, Jean-Briac Perrette.

While CNN+ employees will lose their jobs, they will continue to be paid and receive benefits for the next 90 days. Despite this, employees were obviously shocked to learn that the service had been abruptly shuttered.

As the news agency explains, the launch of CNN+ came before the merger was complete. It appears that folks at WarnerMedia weren’t keen on the streaming service as it scrambled to find $3 billion in savings following the merger that formed Warner Bros. Discovery.

While CNN described the shuttering as a “stunning end to the streaming news service” it doesn’t look like the service was all that stunning. According to a report from Axios earlier this week, CNN+ reportedly only had 150 000 subscribers.

Those subscribers will receive prorated refunds of subscription fees.
