New Halo Infinite multiplayer season continues the narrative

Halo Infinite has spun up the next season of its multiplayer in the form of Lone Wolves: Season 2, but the focus isn’t just on gameplay as there’s story content here too.

“Season 2 sees a new narrative begin to unfold: Cortana’s dominion has ended, and the Banished rushed to fill the void, decimating all who stand in their way. Spartan Commander Agryna is preparing a new generation of Spartans to face them — and perhaps even more dangerous foes. But a few scattered Spartans remain in the field. These Spartans are rugged and resourceful. Hunters in the dark. And they call themselves… Lone Wolves,” reads the announcement.

While some story is nice to see we have to imagine that most are looking forward to new gameplay and for that this season delivers two new maps to the rotation in the form of Breaker (Big Team Battle map) and Catalyst (Arena map). These two will host three modes in the form of classic King of the Hill, Last Spartan Standing and Fracture.

King of the Hill and Last Spartan Standing need no real explanation as the former is a Halo staple while the latter is basically “free for all” which countless other games have done. Fracture is also on the familiar side with players tasked with controlling three neutral zones.

Now for the sticking point of progression. One of the biggest problems with this game’s multiplayer has been the business model which favours slow progression and expensive cosmetics. And, of course there’s a battle pass.

“These Lone Wolves are at the center of Season 2’s all-new Battle Pass, featuring 100 tiers of rewards with an emphasis on the free armor core RAKSHASA. Epitomizing the’ Lone Wolves’ spirit, this core incorporates scrapped, damaged, or otherwise discarded UNSC and Banished Equipment to create a distinctive battlefield-manufactured look that stands apart from other Spartan armors. Also featured among the premium rewards are 1,000 Halo Credits for use in the in-game shop, as well as other customization options and effects for your Spartan,” the worst part of the announcement reads.

Those who bought the Season 1 Battle Pass but haven’t finished yet can choose which battle pass to progress through.

Halo Infinite multiplayer is free to play on PC (Microsoft Store and Steam), Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
