Space Force fails to get a third season nod from Netflix

When Donald Trump fielded the idea of a Space Force many laughed. Then the idea gained legs and now the military division is a reality and likely going to survive longer than the comedy show it was based on.

According to a report from Deadline, Netflix won’t be renewing Space Force for a third season.

Truth be told, it’s not all that surprising that Netflix made this decision. Ratings reveal that the show entered the Nielsen streaming originals top 10, but only climbed to a top spot of number seven. The second series also reportedly failed to make as big of a splash as the first did with Netflix viewers.

Despite having a star-studded cast in Steve Carell, John Malkovich and Jimmy O Yang, Space Force just never hit it off with viewers.

This is the latest in a long line of cancellations but the timing is also notable given Netflix’s latest financial results. The platform announced that its subscriber numbers were dipping and the cancellation of Space Force could be a sign the firm is streamlining its content slate.

On that note, Netflix has announced that Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald will head up a new action-comedy series called Obliterated.

“Obliterated is a high octane action-comedy that tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now intoxicated team has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb, and save the world,” reads a blurb from Netflix.

Another comedy series in a long line of failed shows seems like a bad idea but anybody who has watched Cobra Kai can attest to the quality of that show.

With that having been said, Netflix has failed to launch on numerous occasions and a cancellation of yet another show with a high-profile cast is unlikely to inspire confidence for showrunners, cast members and viewers.
