Western Cape parents have until 17th June to finalise school admission

Parents, caregivers and other guardians of students in the Western Cape need to take note of the 17th June deadline to confirm or decline the school placement offered to them.

This follows the registrations on the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) website for the 2023 school year.

While 17th June is the deadline the WCED does point out two caveats about the process:

  • “After 17 June 2022, parents | guardians | wards only have 3 days to accept a place if they are offered a place at a school.
  • Certified hardcopies must be submitted to the school where the learner will be attending within 7 days of the parent confirming the place at the school.”

We’re not entirely sure why the cut off date is 17th June, but then three extra days are added to that is welcome here.

While the department has focused on students who have been accepted, what about those who have not?

On Twitter the WCED provides this reply to a user asking that question –

“If a learner has not been accepted at a school, the parents are advised to first engage the SGB to establish the reasons why the application was unsuccessful, get clarity on the admission process followed & to motivate for the application to be reconsidered,” the reply reads.

The SGB is the School Governing Body (or bodies) with more details available about it and how to make contact available here.

In other provinces the online registration for Gauteng students opens on 22nd July. In Limpopo it seems that this process is being done entirely in person using physical documents instead.

For all other provinces we recommend following the official Twitter account for the local department of education.
