You can buy Starry Night… as a LEGO set for R3K

The newest adult-focused LEGO set is The Starry Night, a 3D, buildable art piece based on arguably the most famous piece of work from Vincent van Gogh.

The set was revealed recently overseas but now we know how much it will cost in South Africa. A listing for the set at the official LEGO store in the country has it priced at R2 999.

For your money you are getting 2 316 pieces that, when assembled, measures in at 28 X 38 X 12 centimetres (height X width X depth).

As you may have guessed by those measurements that’s rather thick for something that’s supposed to be a rather flat painting. This is because LEGO has tried to capture the details of the painting by making this set more 3D.

Elements of the scene such as the clouds, hills, town and large tree are all built to be raised off of the main backdrop.

Some early reviews for this unique method seem to be of the opinion that the effect works great if you’re looking at the set straight on but the illusion fails a bit when seen from the side.

The “painting” also comes with a sleek, black and buildable frame that can be hung from a nail on the wall or displayed on a shelf with some small stand pieces.

The final trick here is a minifigure of Vincent van Gogh himself. The printing on the minifigure is supposed to mimic the brush strokes of his paintings, and he can be displayed with a paintbrush, paint palette and shrunken down easel also depicting Starry Night.

This product is part of the LEGO Ideas programme which allows for fan creations to go through a voting stage and then a production phase by LEGO with the possibility of being turned into a real set. We’ve seen some great products come out of Ideas such as Voltron, a playable labyrinth, a functional popup book and more.

South Africans will be able to buy set 21333: Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night from 25th May.
