Choosing the right NAS for your SOHO or SME

Since the pandemic struck, remote work has spread the workforce out and this presents something of a danger from a security perspective especially as regards backups.

Where once every employee was using the same network to make local or cloud backups, now the distributed workforce means that backups could be lagging behind thanks to a variety of factors. In the event of a disaster, this can prove problematic and as such, even while working from a small office or a home office, backups are vital to a business’ longevity.

Thankfully, Synology offers a range of expertly crafted Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions that make the job of backing up your data locally simple. Between the Synology Value and J Series, you are bound to find a solution that meets your needs no matter if you’re running a small office/home office (SOHO) or an SME.

But first, why not just make use of Direct-Attached Storage (DAS)? For one, this solution can be limiting and if you need more storage space, that can lead to a large amount of admin and headaches that can be avoided by using a NAS. Furthermore, DAS is limited to one user and one function whereas a NAS can function as a media server, a backup repository and shared storage.

For SOHO users, the Synology DiskStation DS220j is a fantastic starting point. Featuring two drive bays that support both 3.5inch and 2.5inch SATA HDDs and SSDs, the DS220j allows for expansion further down the line should you need it. The system is powered by a quad-core Realtek RTD1296 CPU which is paired with 512MB of RAM. This should be ample to serve up to two users should they need to sync files at the same time.

As for RAID support, the Synology DiskStation DS220j supports:

  • Synology Hybrid RAID
  • Basic
  • JBOD
  • RAID 0
  • RAID 1

For something more robust and geared toward the SME, we turn to the Synology DiskStation DS418.

This versatile four-bay NAS is suited for high-speed file sharing and centralised data management. As such, it comes equipped with dual gigabit LAN ports, a quad-core Realtek RTD1296 CPU and 2GB of RAM. The four-bays support both 3.5inch and 2.5inch SATA HDDs and SSDs and the bays are hot-swappable meaning you can remove a drive while the NAS is powered on. This makes maintaining drives and the NAS far more convenient.

Supported RAID configurations include:

  • Synology Hybrid RAID
  • Basic
  • JBOD
  • RAID 0
  • RAID 1
  • RAID 5
  • RAID 6
  • RAID 10

Of course, Synology offers more than just the DiskStation. In fact, whether you need rack-mounted storage or a simple one drive NAS for the home media centre, Synology has a solution that will most certainly meet your needs. To that end, when shopping for a NAS, the Synology NAS Selector should be your first port of call.
