COVID-19 in South Africa: 21st June 2022

As anticipated, Eskom has decided to implement stage 2 loadshedding across the country in the evenings for much of the week.

This will bring with it concerns about how people will stay warm given the drop in temperatures. The only respite in this entire situation appears to be a decrease in newly recorded cases for COVID-19 in South Africa.

To that end, the past 24 hours has only seen 291 new cases recorded for the spread of the virus, which is far less than we have seen in recent weeks. We will need to see how the coming days will pan out, but for now the outlook is a bit more optimistic.

Consequently, the total number of infections recorded to date now sits at 3 986 892. The department also notes that 16 fatalities have been recorded over the past 24 hours too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has climbed to 101 620.

As for other key figures in the latest report, the recovery rate remains at 97.1 percent, while more than 25.60 million tests have been conducted so far.

Looking at the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen a low 28 984 jabs administered. As of 17:00 on 20th June 2022, a total of 36 634 824 vaccines have been administered across SA.
