Get a good look at Evil West thanks to extended gameplay

Developer Flying Wild Hog and publisher Focus Entertainment have released the first proper look at Evil West, an upcoming third person shooter / brawler where you fight vampire hordes as a “Wild West Superhero”.

This extended gameplay trailer, embedded below, gives us 10 minutes of the game to look at.

We’re really not sure why it’s labelled as “uncut gameplay” in the press release we were sent as there plenty of cuts giving us a look at Evil West from a variety of points throughout.

Our first impression here is that the gameplay looks very meaty and solid, especially the combat. While guns are required for any Wild West setting, no matter how sci-fi it gets, it seems there’s a bigger focus on melee with firearms being complimentary.

This weighty look to things is emphasised with a slower character movement and some gory stuff like shooting the arms right off of a human enemy.

We get some brief glimpses at upgrades and perks that players can unlock to make fighting vampires easier, which seems to feed into the looting for resources we see.

At one point the player character punches the top of a chest to open it, which reminds us of God of War.

Also reminding us of another game is the upside down pyramid in a cave which was also in Control. Then again one was even present in Neon Genesis Evangelion so maybe it’s just a trope at this point.

Our time with the game ends with a boss fight against the creature you can see in the header image above. According to its healthbar it’s called a Highborn and takes the form of a something similar to DC’s Man-Bat.

Something entirely absent from this trailer is co-op which is advertised as a feature. Maybe they’re saving this for a future gameplay reveal.

Evil West is planned for release on 20th September for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders have opened on Steam and the Focus Entertainment Store but as always we advocate against paying for anything before reviews are out.
