M2 processor may power Apple’s mixed reality headset

We are getting our weekly rumoured Apple product story in early, with new reports surfacing about the company’s much vaunted mixed reality headset.

The device was initially expected to be revealed later this year, but now it has been earmarked for 2023. Added to this is the silicon that will be powering the mixed reality headset, with Apple’s own M2 chipset said to be doing the heavy lifting on the wearable.

This according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who unpacked some details in his latest Power On newsletter. Given Gurman’s track record on rumoured Apple hardware, there is indeed some credence behind his words.

“From what I’ve been told, the company is about to embark on one of the most ambitious periods of new products in its history—with the deluge coming between the fall of 2022 and first half of 2023,” says Gurman.

“The new products will include four iPhone 14 models, three Apple Watch variations, several Macs with M2 and M3 chips, the company’s first mixed-reality headset, low-end and high-end iPads, updated AirPods Pro earbuds, a fresh HomePod and an upgraded Apple TV,” he adds.

Given that noted industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told The Information (paywall) in an exclusive report that Apple will feature two processors in its upcoming mixed reality headset, perhaps we will get two iterations of the device.

To that end a consumer-friendly and enterprise-focused options could be in the works, with the former utilising the M1 chip for gaming and metaverse-esque VR experiences and the latter used for augmented reality and design.

With Apple having also recently trademarked the term realityOS, this environment may be the next big push for the company. As such two headsets would make sense, with one used to enjoy experiences and the other intended to help create them.
