Working cell number crucial for grade 1 & 8 online applications

We’re getting ever closer to the opening of the grade one and grade eight online applications opening and the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has provided another reminder to parents and other guardians, this time for cell numbers.

The online portal opens on 22nd July and will close on 19th August. Due to the high amount of traffic that the portal experiences, and the limited number of spaces for students at each school, the GDE has continually provided ways for parents to prepare.

We’ve seen that, recently, the department urged parents to acquire the requisite documents for the process far ahead of time so that they’re ready when 22nd July rolls around.

As for right now the new warning is for a working number that schools and the GDE can use to make contact.

“Parents who will be applying during the [2023 Online Admissions Gauteng Province] for Grade 1 & Grade 8 are reminded to provide ONE reliable & working cellphone number to receive important notifications to complete their application,” the GDE wrote on Twitter.

A working number is just one of the requirements to fill out an application with several certified documents, geographical information, a choice of schools and more all also needed. Again it’s best to have these all sorted out ahead of time especially as factors like organising a number needing outside help from a service provider.

The portal for online applications, when it opens on 22nd July, can be found here. Right now, however, the website seems to be inaccessible with a 403 error popping up when you visit it. Hopefully it’s down for some of the promised upgrades and when it’s live next month things will run smoothly.
