Weta Workshop shows off Thor behind the scenes

Weta Workshop, the famous production house behind CGI and practical effects on countless movies, has released some behind the scenes content for Thor: Love and Thunder.

The focus of this video, which is embedded below, is the main costume that Thor wears through most of the film.

This same costume was also seen in pre-launch trailers and teasers, but it was clear that several of those shots relied on CGI.

These kinds of videos are great because you get to see what is real and what is fake and, for at least one version of the costume, it’s entirely real.

“Peek behind the scenes with Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, directed by fellow kiwi, Taika Waititi. Played by Chris Hemsworth, the character of Thor is on a mission to discover what kind of man he really is. The evolution of his superhero suit throughout the film is key to his epic journey of self-discovery,” reads the video description.

Weta Workshop also pointed out that it worked with Mayes Rubeo, a costume designer. The company and Rubeo created the costume by using concept art from Andy Park, the  Director of Visual Development at Marvel Studios.

Watching the video shows that all manner of techniques were used here from CAD work, to 3D printing resin printing, to more traditional latex pouring and sewing.

“Each suit needed to be distinctive from the next providing visual clues to move the narrative along, while retaining enough elements of Thor’s original look to remain true to the Thor that audiences have come to know. Wētā Workshop built two of Thor’s hero suits, which we referred to as New Thor and Extreme Thor,” the description adds.
