Your home needs a Synology NAS, here’s why

With streaming having become as pervasive as it has, the idea of hoarding content on an external hard drive somewhere has become rather antiquated. However, while you may no longer need to hoard content, you really should be backing up your important data, photos, and videos.

This is of course easier said than done and more often than not life can become overwhelming and your backups fall behind until eventually, the data you have is so out of date that it’s useless. Should this sound like you then there is a rather simple and affordable solution.

You may have heard of network attached storage (NAS) in the context of a business and while this is generally where a NAS can be found, that doesn’t mean they are out of place in the home. Unlike desktop attached storage, a NAS is attached to the network allowing anybody with the required permissions to access the data or even make use of the storage the NAS offers up.

One of the marquee features of a NAS though is the simplicity it brings to backing up data.

Cloud storage is great but if uploading 100+ 8K resolution photos causes your data plan to cringe, a NAS can help. This is because unlike cloud storage, a NAS is local and won’t eat into your data plan. With that having been said, Synology’s QuickConnect feature in its DiskStation NAS allows for remote access over the internet, just be sure to set a very secure password. Synology’s Hyper Backup stores folders, system settings and software packages to a variety of locations so that all of your eggs aren’t in one basket. You are able to backup your NAS to Google Drive, S-3 compatible storage, rsync servers or even another Synology NAS.

While we may not be hoarding content, there are folks that do and if you are that sort of person, Synology’s software and user interface makes turning your NAS into a media centre a simple exercise. What’s more is that you aren’t limited to one single stream at a time like some pay-TV services.

Of course, we can’t mention electronics without mentioning electricity. Synology NAS devices are perfectly suited for energy conscious users. The Synology DS120j for instance, sips a tiny 9.81W of power, perfect for pairing with a UPS or to run on your generator should the lights go out.

Looking at all of this, it can seem rather daunting but Synology makes taking the first step easy. Through the Synology NAS Selector you can choose what you want to use the NAS for, what sort of product would suit your needs. Should you need more assistance, expert online support is available at the click of a button.
