Applications for DSI-CSIR bursary close tomorrow

One last call has been put out for a bursary opportunity in South Africa with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The DSI-CSIR Inter-Bursary Support Programme 2023 closes its application window tomorrow, 4th August at 17:00, leaving applicants a small remaining window to participate.

“The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) has recently launched its inter-programme postgraduate bursary support scheme, aimed at supporting capacity development in strategic and priority areas identified in key departmental strategies. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is supporting the DSI in the development of skills in these areas,” the description reads.

“The IBS postgraduate bursary support is intended for full-time studies for honours / 4th year Engineering / postgraduate diploma, master’s or PhD degrees at any South African public university.”

The Rand value of the bursary, per year, varies by the type of qualification students will be following. For Honours, 4th year engineering and Postgraduate diplomas it is R100 000, Master’s is R120 000 and for a PhD it’s R140 000. On top of this a once-off notebook (laptop) allowance of R10 000 will be provided.

As one may expect the fields of study supported by the programme, given its focus, are quite limited with the the following list provided for supported research areas:

  • “Aerospace
  • Composites
  • Modelling and digital sciences (data science, biometrics, cybersecurity etc)
  • Microsystems Technology
  • Titanium (manufacturing elements)
  • Photonics (free space communication, fibre-optics, laser welding and optics)
  • Biotechnology (Biopharming, bio- processing and bio – catalysis)
  • Information and Communications Technology
  • Health
  • Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) – (Bioprospecting research, product and process
    development).”

Those looking to apply should head on over to the CSIR bursary portal here to get an application form. Before that, however, more information about the DSI-CSIR Inter-Bursary Support Programme can be found here as a PDF.

Students will be informed on the status of their application within two months of the closing date.
