Sims rule the roost on Steam, take up half of top seller list

Sims – that is simulation games, not The Sims – have proven to be a successful genre on Steam again as Valve releases its monthly recap of the top performing games on its store.

As usual Valve brings us this information rather late as this report is not for August, but for July 2022.

For July 2022 Valve remarks that around half of the games from the top 20 list are from various sub-tags related to the simulation genre. This doesn’t mean that every game is a hard core sim like the ever-popular Truck Simulator, but instead more abstract titles like cleaning game PowerWash Simulator and city builder Sweet Transit.

Some would argue these aren’t true sims but there’s obviously a huge market for them and various developers and publishers are giving players what they want.

Valve provides us three lists for July: the top paid games, top paid DLC and top free-to-play. For paid content landing on the list depends on the revenue generated in the first two weeks of release, while for the free stuff it’s measured by number of players.

These lists are provided to the public here in a completely random order as to not give too much information away about the success of each title. We’ve reorganised this into alphabetical order for easier reading below –
