Six things to watch on Showmax and Netflix in August 2022

Does anybody else feel like 2022 is just flying by? Perhaps it has something to do with those pesky leap seconds Meta was on about a few weeks ago.

The relativity of time aside, a new month means the arrival of new content on streaming services. There are some rather intriguing movies and series arriving on Showmax and Netflix this month and we’ve selected six we think you should know about.

Chad and JT Go Deep – On Netflix 23rd August

YouTube appears to be a feeding ground for Netflix. First we had the fellas from Aunty Donna starring in Netflix Original Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun and now two dudes get a shot. Chad Kroeger (no, not the Nickelback frontman) and JT Parr from Chad and JT Go Deep star in erm, Chad and JT Go Deep. You may have seen these dudes online spreading awareness about social issues in like, the most chill way possible. It’s really tight. We’re keen to see what these YouTubers do with the Netflix platform. On that, Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun season two on Netflix when?

County 49 – On Showmax 25th August

Showmax’s fifth Kenyan Original. County 49 looks incredibly interesting. The political thriller is set in the fictional Bwatele County, the breadbasket of the nation in the series. County 49 will follow the tale of a disgraced security officer who is compelled to save the governor, her chief of staff and his estranged wife from a terrorist group. It sounds exhilarating and we can’t wait to watch this.

Scream (2022) – On Showmax 11th August

The 90s was the age of the gaudy over the top teen slasher flick and we miss those days. In a bid to stoke that nostalgia 2022 saw the release of the sequel to 2011’s Scream 4, erm, Scream.
The film sees the return of cast members from the original films including Courtney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell when a new killer dons the Ghostface getup.

Trainwreck: Woodstock ’99 –  On Netflix 3rd August

Woodstock 1969 is remembered as a day filled with music and the loving air that followed hippies and their ilk around. In 1999 an attempt to recreate that occasion resulted in rage, riots and harm. This Netflix Original documentary will take a look at what went wrong.

Reyka – On Showmax 1st August

This series follows criminal profiler Reyka Gama (played by the brilliant Kim Engelbrecht) as she investigates a string of brutal murders in the sugar cane fields of KwaZulu-Natal. The series also stars Iain Glen as the farmer who abducted Reyka as a child. This eight part series looks like it will be a tough watch especially if you aren’t a fan of dark crime fiction.

The Sandman – On Netflix 5th August

There isn’t much more that we can say other than it’s Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman as a live action series. We’re cautiously optimistic about this series despite Netflix’s reputation when it comes to live-action adaptations of graphic novels and anime.
