Sony expects to launch PSVR2 headset in early 2023

Sony has been a little quiet on the hardware front of late, but that changed this week as the company confirmed that its new PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2) headset is currently slated for launch in early 2023.

Unfortunately that is really all there is to the announcement, with a recent Instagram post only captioned, “Coming early 2023. #PSVR2“.

As such, we still have no idea how much the second generation gaming VR headset and controllers will cost, nor do we have a more precise date than early 2023. Given that this is after the 2022 holiday season, we wonder whether there will be any gamer funds available to match the interest in the PSVR2.

While we await news on the pricing and region availability fronts, what we do know about the PSVR2 is that its display setup will yield 4K HDR visuals, with frame rates of either 90Hz or 120Hz. Added to this will be a 110-degree field of view, as well as foveated rendering, which will see the PS5 render certain elements in sharper quality than others in order to smooth out the experience.

We also know that the PSVR2 will have roughly 20 titles available at launch, with the likes of Horizon Zero Dawn, No Man’s Sky and Resident Evil Village being the most notable announced to date. It is also unclear just how deep the VR experiences are for these titles, with titles on the original PSVR, like Batman: Arkham VR, not being all that long.

Whether any new PlayStation-exclusive offerings will be added to the mix at launch remains to be seen, but for now the lineup is a little bare. Hopefully that changes as we get closer to that early 2023 window.
