The Logitech G502 will remain on sale as the G502 X releases

Today Logitech has announced the G502 X line, a trio of new mice that are meant to be the successors to the venerable Logitech G502 but for diehards of the original, it will remain on sale.

We learned this in a recent media roundtable with Logitech where we were shown off many of the new features of the G502 X. We asked if the original versions would remain available, and we were told that they would indeed be kept on the market for customers to buy.

For those out of the lop the original G502, and by extension its LIGHTSPEED wireless version, is one of the most beloved pieces of hardware tech out there.

You will almost certainly see the G502 at the top of best selling lists on ecommerce sites, and it routinely appears in listicles of the best available mice to pick up.

There is even a subreddit dedicated to the G502 and this is something we also asked Logitech about in the roundtable as the company took input from multiple sources to make the new G502 X.

“It’s crazy to see how it became an icon over the years, winning the hearts if gamers. I spoke to a lot of users who are still using it and they appreciate the fact that you can go between games and have all the controls right there. If you go between an MMO, FPS MOBA etc you have everything you need. What we wanted to do with this new one is make the experience more performant and delighted. I look forward to the next subreddit for the G502 X,” says Nicolas Métral, the Senior Global Product Manager – Gaming Business Group at Logitech.

But what about the new G502 X mice?

With the original so beloved, what has Logitech done to improve things? The first big change is to the main two buttons which now use what the company calls a “LIGHTFORCE Hybrid Switch”.

“All new hybrid optical switches with incredible speed and reliability, as well as precise actuation with crisp response. LIGHTFORCE is a revolutionary microswitch technology that combines the performance and durability benefits of optical switches with the important actuation feel of mechanical switches that gamers love,” a press release we received reads.

Check back to Hypertext soon for a review on the G502 X but we can attest to the how great this new switch is. As long time users of the older G502, this is one of the biggest changes for the better.

The new iteration also features weight reduction across the board, PTFE feed for smoother movement and several small quality of life changes. Our favourite of these small features is, for the LIGHTSPEED and PLUS models which are wireless, the ability to turn mouse lighting off when your hand is placed on top of the mouse.

As you won’t see this lighting anyway, this helps save battery life.

The new line of G502 X comes in three flavours: the base model, the wireless LIGHTSPEED and then the tricked out Plus on the top of the pile.

Aside from the three different models, buyers also have the choice between two colours with both black and white available at launch.

Finally let’s talk about South African availability. The new G502 X mice will arrive in South Africa in October with the following retail prices:

  • G502 X Gaming Mouse | R 1 499
  • G502 X LIGHTSPEED | R 2 699
  • G502 X PLUS Wireless Gaming Mouse | R 2 999
