Valve fixes 5GHz WiFi problem on the Steam Deck

Valve has issued a substantial update for the Steam Deck and one element may be of particular interest for its users on a 5GHz WiFi connection.

The Steam Deck Client update and SteamOS 3.3 are out now and the following is listed under the drivers and firmware notes:

  • Updated graphics driver with compatibility and performance fixes
  • Updated wireless driver with fixes for WiFi disconnection issues on 5GHz
  • Updated controller firmware utilities to support future controller hardware revisions

According to users on places like Reddit and the Steam Community, the disconnection issues on 5GHz WiFi has been a real sore spot that they’re happy to see fixed.

As a mobile device any interruptions to the wireless connection is a pain, especially for those using their Steam Deck for multiplayer, so we’re happy to see it fixed.

The rest of the patchnotes – which you can read here – address a number of other problems too.

Of particular note is better support for other languages with Japanese, Korean and Chinese (both simplified and traditional) receiving keyboard support. While better support for all languages is very welcome Valve does tempter this change by stating that these are still being refined and that feedback is welcome on the forums.

While not as important as language support this section about a night mode caught our eye:

“Added a scheduled night mode feature, allowing players to choose if and when they’d like night mode to automatically turn on,” the notes read.

We have to wonder how many Steam Deck owners will make use of this as it seems like a feature more intended for desktops and notebooks.

So it’s another substantial update and the latest in a long line of post-release support for the Steam Deck. Hopefully this continues and the hardware is eventually brought to more countries with territories like South Africa hoping for further availability.
