What we’re watching on Netflix, Showmax and Disney+ in September

There are times where we sit down to write about the most exciting content for the next month and find ourselves searching for anything interesting.

This time isn’t like that with Netflix, Showmax and Disney+ all bringing incredible content to their respective platforms. We’ve had to exercise a lot of restraint here to select nine movies, doccies and series arriving in September.

We Own This City – Showmax 1st September

Did you love The Wire? Of course you did, it was one of the best series ever produced and we won’t be taking comments stating otherwise. We Own This City is co-created by David Simon and highlights the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force. We’re incredibly excited for this especially with Wunmi Mosaku and Jon Bernthal in leading roles.

Thor: Love and Thunder – Disney+ 8th September

Marvel’s God of Thunder returns to face Gorr the God Butcher who is intent on making Gods extinct. Thor must team up with King Valkyrie, Korg and Jane Foster who is now Mighty Thor to fight off this threat.

Cobra Kai: Season 5 – Netflix 9th September

Who would have thought a series based on a movie released in the 80s would become as popular as it has. Cobra Kai returns later this month for its 5th season and things appear to be getting rather heated in this latest season. If you haven’t watched Cobra Kai yet, consider the new season’s arrival a sign to binge it all on Netflix.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – Netflix 13th September

While the heavily bugged and subsequently patched Cyberpunk: 2077 forced us to take a long hard look in the mirror for jumping on the hype train, Edgerunners looks to be an entirely different beast. It also looks particularly insane, as the strobe-filled and NSFW trailer below will attest. The series lands on Netflix in the middle of September.

The Handmaid’s Tale: Season 5 – Showmax 15th September

The dystopian world create by Margaret Atwood lives on in the fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale. Following the death of Commander Waterford at the end of the last season, June must now face the consequences of her actions and rescue her daughter while Gilead’s influence spreads.

Thai Cave Rescue – Netflix 22nd September

The rescue of the Wild Boars soccer team captured the world’s attention for nearly a month in 2018. Now a drama-series arrives on Netflix that tells the story of the team and the assistant coach while stuck in Tham Luang Cave. We have to wonder if Elon Musk will make an appearance.

Steinheist – Showmax 22nd September

From the creators of Devilsdorp comes Steinheist. This docu-series tells the story of Steinhoff which saw its share price drop 90 percent in one week. This wiped R200 billion in value off of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, putting pensions and investments in jeopardy. The docu-series will take a look at what happened and Steinhoff’s chief executive officer, Markus Jooste.

Blood Psalms – Showmax 28th September

We don’t want to turn this into picking a favourite but Blood Psalms is a show we’ve been waiting for since at least last year. This high-fantasy series is set in Ancient Africa, one thousand years after the fall of Atlantis. We are excited to see how African history and mythology is incorporated into Blood Psalms and we can’t wait to sit down and watch new episodes every Wednesday.

Hocus Pocus 2 – Disney+ 30th September

The Sanderson sisters return nearly 30 years later to terrify an entirely new generation of children. In this sequel, three women accidentally bring the Sanderson Sisters to modern-day Salem. The women must then figure out how to stop the hungry witches from eating the town’s children. We told you it’d terrify children.
