Written by Janine Umair, on behalf of Latest Specials.

Every four years, the world watches as the biggest sporting event in the world takes place: The FIFA World Cup. Whether you’re a seasoned soccer fan or a newbie, it’s important to know how and where to watch your favourite teams battle it out on the field.

This year, the event kicks off on the 20th of November with the final on the 18th of December. It includes 64 men’s matches and is hosted by Qatar. This will be the first time the World Cup will be held in the Middle East.

The winning nation will claim bragging rights for the next four years. With this at play, you can expect some major upsets and record-setting goals.

Who qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2022?

Out of the 210 FIFA member nations, 32 teams were left standing: there are six nations from Asia, five from Africa, four from North & Central America, four from South America and 13 from Europe.

These countries were placed in groups based on their world ranking while the host country was put in group 1 through automatic placement. On 1st April, the groups for the opening matches of the tournament were drawn.

The groups for the event include:

  • Group A: Qatar, Senegal, Ecuador, Netherlands.
  • Group B: England, Iran, Wales, USA.
  • Group C: Argentina, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Poland.
  • Group D: France, Tunisia, Australia, Denmark.
  • Group E: Spain, Japan, Costa Rica, Germany.
  • Group F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia.
  • Group G: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon.
  • Group H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea.

Excited yet? If you’re planning to watch your favourite teams in action at home, here are the best ways to stream the World Cup this year:

How to stream the FIFA World Cup

Before choosing a streaming platform, it’s important to make sure you have enough data on your streaming device. You don’t want to run out mid match!

To find the latest specials on data from the most popular mobile network operators, you can look for their online catalogues. For example, you can search for MTN deals to find the latest weekly and monthly specials on MTN data available.

Once your device is loaded, you can choose one of the following streaming platforms:

SuperSport

SuperSport announced earlier this year that they will broadcast all 64 matches live from Qatar. They will offer a 24-hour channel for the duration of the event.

Showmax Pro

The event will also be available to stream live on Showmax Pro for subscribers across the African continent. All 64 games will include English commentary. The streaming will also show the studio presentations, half-time chats and wraps of the day from SuperSport.

BBC iPlayer

With a quality VPN, you can also stream all the fixtures online through BBC iPlayer, as well as catch up on any other World Cup adjacent coverage. This streaming service is available on most devices, including mobile phones and smart TVs.

YouTube TV

Again, you will need a good VPN to stream YouTube TV’s broadcast of the World Cup, but it’s a reliable platform that promises to include a variety of highlights that can be enjoyed in 4K.

Will the FIFA World Cup be shown on SABC?

No. SuperSport received exclusive rights to live stream the event in South Africa.

Get ready for the biggest sporting event in the world.

As you eagerly await the thrilling action from the most prestigious soccer competition in the world, it’s a great idea to get your device ready, choose your streaming platform and plan your viewing schedule.
