E3 is coming back in 2023 but does it really matter?

  • Following a hiatus this year, E3 will return in June 2023.
  • The event will consist of E3 Business Days for professionals and E3 Gamer Days for the general public.
  • The event is being organised by ReedPop.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw the widespread cancellation of many in-person events and now that restrictions have eased, those events are back on the table.

Perhaps the most notable of these events is E3 the expo centred around gaming.

During E3, developers, publishers, media and gamers arrive in Los Angeles to celebrate their favourite art form. The event was cancelled this year, but will return from 13th to 16th June 2023. The four-day event will take place at the Los Angeles Convention centre and ReedPop will be organising the event. The event was cancelled this year due to the ongoing pandemic.

“E3 is one of the global gaming industry’s few opportunities to come together, unite as one loud voice, and show the world what it is creating,” vice president of gaming at ReedPop, Kyle Marsden-Kish said in a press statement.

“Our vision is to reunite the industry by re-establishing the traditional E3 week, bring back that spark, and restore E3’s role as a truly magical global showcase event for game creators and consumers,” the VP added.

The four-day expo will comprise E3 Business Days and E3 Gamer Days. Business Days take place from 13th – 15th June and are exclusively for “registered industry personnel”. This means members of the media won’t have to battle through throngs of people to test a game out.

Gamer Days span the final two days of the expo and here the general public will be able to go hands on with games, meet developers content creators and more.

The question hanging over this event will be – who is attending E3 2023?

It’s important to remember that while E3 is a big event, many presentations happen adjacent to the E3 banner, simply capitalising on the name to draw attention. And that’s if publishers even host an event during that time. Sony hasn’t attended an E3 since 2018 and we have to think that the cost savings presented by virtual events over the years are on the minds of the likes of Microsoft, EA and Nintendo.

We’ll be watching the wires eagerly for news regarding E3 2023, but we’re not hopeful that it will be a packed show.
