• A new Iron Man game has been rumoured for some time now. 
• Motive Studio will develop with EA publishing. 
• Motive Studio is best known for Star Wars: Squadrons from 2020. 

For the longest time we’ve been hearings rumours of a new Iron Man game and today it has finally been revealed by Marvel, EA and Motive Studio.

While we’re sure most people are familiar with Marvel and EA, Motive Studio is a smaller name. The developer created the 2020 title Star Wars: Squadrons (see our review of that game here) and it’s also working on the Dead Space remake.

Motive was also a supporting developer on Star Wars Battlefront II.

While we’re happy for this trio of companies to finally reveal that the game is in fact being made, we’re disappointed that all we have is the teaser image above and this short description:

“… an all-new single-player, third-person, action-adventure Iron Man video game… Developed in collaboration with Marvel Games, the game will feature an original narrative that taps into the rich history of Iron Man, channeling the complexity, charisma, and creative genius of Tony Stark, and enabling players to feel what it’s like to truly play as Iron Man,” the announcement reads.

And, well, that’s all we know.

If we had to try to read between the lines we’re interested by the mentioned of complexity in that description. Infamously, many incarnations of comic Tony Stark paints him as a troubled alcoholic with the Demon in a Bottle arc as one of the defining parts of the character’s history.

After the MCu version of Tony Stark played things much more straight laced, that has become the de facto version of this character for the last ten plus years. We’re doubtful EA of all publishers would make the central figure of their game an alcoholic, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

How long we’ll have to wait is another mystery as no timeline on the game has been provided, and we’re only told that the unnamed title is in early development.

The development is so early that you could even find yourself working on it.

“The game is currently in the pre-production phase and we’ll have more updates as we get further along in development. This is an exciting new collaboration between Marvel and Electronic Arts, with Iron Man being the first of several new games. Motive is actively growing their team and you can check out open positions on their website if you’re interested in helping them craft the ultimate Iron Man video game adventure,” the announcement continues.

The game industry still feels very cold on superhero games overall after the disastrous mess that was 2020’s Marvel’s Avengers. While we’ve since had the rather great Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021, we’re not sure if most people are excited about this Iron Man endeavour just yet.

The last solo Iron Man videogame of note was Iron Man VR in 2020. It’s a mostly forgotten virtual reality experience that we’re willing to bet most people had not thought about for years until we mentioned it.
