Second gen AirPods Pro add touch controls and personalised spatial audio

Rumoured in the lead up to this evening’s Apple event, the Cupertino-based company did indeed reveal a new pair of wireless earphones with a second generation of AirPods Pro.

The new wearables are christened as Apple’s most advanced AirPods ever and to the company’s credit, it has indeed made improvements to the inside and outside of these wireless earphones, as well as adding some handy features to its charging case too.

“The new AirPods Pro deliver even better sound quality, a more immersive listening experience with Personalized Spatial Audio, and transformative audio features like Adaptive Transparency. With up to double the noise-cancelling power of their predecessor, the world’s bestselling wireless headphones just got even better,” noted Bob Borchers, Apple’s VP of Worldwide Product Marketing, in a blog post.

Powering many of those improvements is a new H2 chipset internally, which enables on-device processing.

Added to this is a new low-distortion audio driver and custom amplifier, giving the earphones richer bass and crystal-clear sound across a wider range of frequencies, according to Apple.

One of the other key additions is on-device controls too. Here, wearers can control media playback and turn up the volume without using another device. A swipe up or down on the stem enables volume adjustments, while pressing the stem changes the music, answers phone calls, as well as a “Hey Siri” prompting requests hands-free.

As for the charging case, it now supports wireless charging via a certified Apple product, storing up to 24 hours of additional charge and featuring an onboard speaker to help users find the case if lost.

The second generation AirPods Pro will go up for order in 50 countries across the globe this Friday, so we will have to wait to see how much it costs for South Africans. For now it is listed at $249 Stateside.
