Latest Elden Ring patch includes files that hint at expansion

  • Patch 1.07 for Elden Ring amps up the power for fans of Magic in the game.
  • The game files also include mention of ray tracing.
  • Data miners discovered mention of two maps that weren’t previously in the game, hinting at a possible expansion.

On Thursday, FromSoftware released its latest patch for Elden Ring. The patch brings with it a number of improvements and tuning for various aspects of the game, but we’re interested in what the game isn’t putting on display.

As reported by Kotaku, diving into the game files after the update revealed two noteworthy clues. The first is that there are references to ray tracing, pointing to the possibility that the technology will be coming to the game at some point. Elden Ring is already a jaw dropping game from a visual standpoint so ray tracing will only amplify that even more.

The more exciting news, however, is mention of two new maps in the game files.

The map m20 is said to be a new Legacy Dungeon as the name is similar to other Legacy Dungeon maps that already exist in the game. The m45 map, however, is entirely new and hints at a potential new area being added to the game.

We can theorise about what this new area could be, but we’d be here for hours.

As for the patch itself, FromSoftware has introduced separate damage scaling for PvP.

“This feature allows separate damage scaling for Weapons, Skills, Spells, and Incantations when playing against other players. In the future, this feature may be used to balance weapons, Art, Spell, and Incantation in invading/PvP mode. Balance adjustments made within this feature will not impact single-player and cooperative play,” the developer explained.

While the last massive patch for Elden Ring focused on strength and colossal weapons, this patch appears to be geared at increasing the effectiveness of magic use. The Focus Power consumption of a laundry list of spells has been decreased, but so have the effectiveness of some status effects. For instance Rotten Breath and Ekzykes’s Decay have had their Scarlet Rot status effect build-up reduced.

There is still of course no official word on an expansion for Elden Ring. By August, the title had sold 16.6 million units with 12 million of those sales happening just two weeks after release.

While we were convinced that Elden Ring would be the game of the year, the imminent launch of God of War: Ragnarok on 9th November is sure to liven up that battle.

Patch 1.07 for Elden Ring is now available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.
