Matric exams 2022: Six free websites for last minute prep

There are just three days left before the October/November 2022 National Senior Certificate matric exams begin on Monday and this year, with loadshedding and other unnecessary distractions looming overhead, matrics will need all the help they can get.

The end-year exams can be tough and all the pressure seems to be right on top of 2022’s crop of matrics to perform and lead the country into the future. This year we have scoured the internet for some of the best free resources we think can help students prepare for their exams.

Remember, nothing will outperform actually studying but these sites can bolster your performance in meaningful ways if used properly. All the resources on this list are free and some even cost no data to access.

Here are six free websites to help you prepare for your matric exams

Integral Calculator

The first website on this list is more for your general “quality of life” while studying mathematics. We all know maths is hard and your scientific calculator will only take you so far.

Integral Calculator will save you time while studying math and might make visualising a bit easier.

With this free online tool, you can calculate integrals and see what the entire formulae look like, as well as any corresponding graphs. If you’re struggling with trigonometry: SIN, COS and TAN – this could help.

The Department of Basic Education Website

Sometimes the best place to get information about the upcoming exam period is right from the horse’s mouth. Resources on this site are available without needing a sign-up.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) website has loads of resources for students preparing for the big test. From past papers to an online video learning hub.

DBE’s NSC examination portal has past papers that date back to 2006 but new matrics should focus on the latest ones as they will have the ones most similar to the tests you will be writing in November.

The portal has past papers in multiple languages covering just about every subject even South African Sign Language has papers ready for review. The papers are ready for download in PDF and can be accessed using a smartphone too.

Beeline

Beeline is a free online platform created by a team of Cape Town developers currently in its beta stage. The app uses systems similar to online games and different types of videos and images to make learning easier.

All you will need to sign up for Beeline is an email address and you can then take advantage of all the learning content it has to offer.

Earlier this month we spoke to one of the co-founders of Beeline and we learned that the platform was tested by matric learners. To this end, there is a learning path dedicated to helping matrics prepare for their exams.

These learning paths teach you certain skills that can improve your exam writing and due to Beeline’s unique method of teaching it will be easier and more fun than traditional learning. Give it a go.

MTN Online School

If you’re struggling with data costs in terms of accessing online learning material, then look no further than MTN’s Online School.

Launched last year by MTN, the platform is zero-rated, which means it won’t use any smartphone data. All you need to sign up is a phone number, on which you will be sent a one-time pin once you sign up for the site.

Afterwards, you will be able to register for a course. Matrics can take advantage of learning materials for languages, mathematics, maths literacy, accounting, business studies, history and many other subjects, including the arts.

Once a course and a grade are selected you will be able to take advantage of lessons created for the course in question using a multimedia approach. For example, English has lessons that include PowerPoint presentations with audio and added videos.

EduHub

Hosting both free past papers and memos for matric exams, EduHub is a free, lite application for smartphones only available for Android devices.

It has compilations of videos from tutors and study guides aimed at helping not just matrics but grade 10 and 11 students prepare for their tests all neatly packed on one platform.

EduHub is updated constantly by a passionate team headed by developer Brandon Wilson and is aimed to assist underprivileged students specifically in easily finding and taking advantage of past papers and memorandums.

WozaMatrics

For a free comprehensive hub of all the matric exams information available, with access to TV and interactive learning look no further than the government’s recently released WozaMatrics online platform.

Through WozaMatrics you can easily check out a YouTube channel that has a series of playlists of lessons aimed at preparing matrics for their end-year exams, including revisions for mathematics, English and other subjects.

On the WozaMatrics platform, students can reach out to teachers on a Telegram chat server called “Velle” and can even submit questions on a WhatsApp line where a “subject specialist will respond.” Unfortunately, both the WhatsApp line and the Telegram server were unavailable at the time of writing.

Hopefully, some of the options in this list will make studying for the upcoming matric exams a bit easier. We wish you luck!
