Audi rolls out 43 EV charging stations in SA, with more to come

  • Audi South Africa has undertaken a project to make as many charging stations as possible available to local EV drivers.
  • The latest phase of this project has seen 43 new stations rolled out by the company and its partners.
  • There are now 76 Audi-branded EV charging stations in South Africa.

Whenever we cover the announcement of a new electric vehicle (EV), we often lament the lack of charging stations here in South Africa. This is something that Audi is acutely aware of, which is why the company has been rolling out a network of charging stations across the country lately.

This multi-phase project recently completed its second phase, with 43 new charging stations added to the network. This means that there are now 76 Audi-branded charging stations in SA, which have been made available thanks to partnerships with GridCars and Rubicon, allowing those both with and without an Audi EV to charge their vehicle.

“The latest rollout includes the very first DC 200kW ultra-fast charger in South Africa, which is installed at the largest shopping mall ever built in a single phase – Mall of Africa – enabling compatible cars to ultra-fast charge,” explained Audi in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“The rest of this second phase of infrastructure investment comprises four 100kW (DC), eight 60kW (DC), five 25kW (DC) and twenty-five 22kW (AC) fast EV charger installations at convenient locations across the country to serve all EV customers,” it adds.

There is still more to come, according to the German car brand.

“The rollout of our second phase of EV charging stations is the next step in realising our vision of sustainable mobility and living our mantra that the ‘Future is an Attitude’,” enthused Sascha Sauer, head of Audi South Africa.

“While load shedding is a reality to which South Africans have become accustomed, it is worth pointing out that our charging network also capitalises on solar installations, where possible, to keep the charging stations optimally operational,” Sauer continued.

The number of aforementioned 43 stations are broken down by province as follows:

Gauteng15
Western Cape11
Eastern Cape10
KwaZulu-Natal4
Mpumalanga2
Free State1
Total43
