Honor Magic5 Pro breaks cover at MWC 23 as latest flagship

  • Honor held a press conference for its new flagship phone – the Honor5 Pro – at MWC 23 earlier today.
  • Its big selling points are display and camera, with a trio of 50MP lenses to cater for the latter.
  • Honor is also making its foldable, the Honor Vs, available in selected markets outside of China.

Not to be left behind by other Android phonemakers, Honor too is present in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress (MWC 23) this week, hosting a press conference for its latest flagship phones. These include the Honor Magic5 Pro, which was unveiled to the world for the first time, and the Magic Vs foldable phone.

The latter has been out for a few months now, but only available to purchase in China, which changes today as the company readies to ship it to selected countries.

Back to the Magic5 Pro and two of its defining features are the display and camera array. The screen on offer is a 6.81″ offering that yields a resolution of 2848×1312, along with support for a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. It also has curved edges at the side bezels, and a pill-shaped punch hole for the front facing camera.

As for the primary camera system, Honor is calling is Falcon, with the choice of the raptor moniker speaking to its ability to capture content with precision, according to the company. Looking at the lenses on offer, a trio of 50MP options are on hand, with a wide-angle, ultra wide-angle, and telephoto to call upon. Up front is a 12MP and depth sensing combination for taking selfies and the like.

The other notable elements at work here include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, which is the benchmark for most Android flagships in 2023, along with a massive 5 100mAh battery, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, support for 5G, and a IP68-rated waterproofness and dust resistance.

Shifting to the Magic Vs, and Honor has not detailed all the regions it will be made available just yet, so we will need to see whether South Africa makes the cut. At the time of writing, RRP on the Magic Vs is €1 599 (~R31 165).

The Magic5 Pro is recommended to retail for €1 199 (~R23 369), although we are yet to hear when, or indeed if, it will be officially sold locally. Once those details do arrive, there will be quite a few options outside of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series to consider.
