Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty receives massive R320 price increase in South Africa

  • South Africans have had the price of the game increase from R499 to R819 shortly before the 3rd March release.
  • Several other countries have received price increases too.
  • Users on Reddit discovered the change just as the game is about to launch.

South Africans have once again been affected by a massive change in a game’s price on Steam, this time for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

As one of the most anticipated games of this first quarter of 2023, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty launches on 3rd March.

Just an hour ago at the time of writing a user on the /r/PCGaming subreddit pointed out that the game has received notable price increases in several regions.

The user links to the Steam Database (SteamDB) website, which is an external tracker of everything that happens on Valve’s store. There it provides a chart showing the price of the game over time. We can see on this graph that the price of the game has remained steady at R499 for the longest time, before shooting up to R819.

That’s a R320 difference, or a 64.12 percent increase.

We can see a similar price increase in the Digital Deluxe version of the game, originally costing R705 and now increased to R1 161.

That is, strangely, a 64.68 percent increase.

No explanation is provided for this change with the Steam page’s providing nothing, and the official Twitter account also of no help.

Unfortunately this is far from the first time that a massive local price increase has happened with one of the more notable examples from recent years being the PC port of Horizon Zero Dawn.

Back in July 2020 it went from R269 to R680.

While that is a 152.788 percent increase, which is a bigger jump than Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, it was more understandable as the original lower price for Horizon Zero Dawn seemed to be a mistake when the game was listed that was changed a few days later. For Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty to be such an anticipated game, that changes its price so much just before launch, is an entirely different situation.

Despite the different situations, South Africa is not the only country or region affected. From a cursory look on our end, again using SteamDB, we have seen increases for Argentina, Brazil, The Philippines, Costa Rica, Columbia, Qatar, Turkey, Chile, Kazakhstan, The UAE, India, Kuwait, Peru, Saudia Arabia, Ukraine, Commonwealth of Independent States and Uruguay.
