Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty release patch to address numerous technical problems

  • Ver. 1.03 for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty has been released.
  • That patch addresses numerous bugs, technical issues and camera controls.
  • The game previously had “Mostly Negative” reviews on Steam due to these problems.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty has had a rough launch on PC to say the least. Certain territories – including South Africa – saw massive price increases just days before the game launched, and when it was made available early adopters quickly found themselves plagued by issues that gave the game poor performance, crashing issues and general playability problems.

Now a new patch has been released that seeks to address at least some of this, with Ver. 1.03 of the game now live.

Right at the top of the list is adjustments, with the first point being improvements to camera controls when using a mouse. A common issue players pointed out is that mouse and keyboard controls were horrendous and downright unplayable. Many reviews pointed out that previous games from Team Ninja, especially the most recent Nioh 2, was perfectly playable and enjoyable with mouse and keyboard, making Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty a step backwards.

The meat of the update, however, is the major bug fixes:

  • Fixed crash-prone situations that occurred in certain environments,
  • Fixed white flickers that occurred in certain environments,
  • Fixed a bug that caused some resolutions to not be selectable in certain environments,
  • Fixed a problem in which the wrong graphics card was selected to run the game in certain environments,
  • Fixed a bug that caused a crash when running the game with a certain screen resolution setting, and then applying a specific filter in Photograph mode and exiting,
  • Fixed a bug in which the player would not be able to progress beyond the area where they encounter Zhao Yun in the main battlefield ‘Two Chivalrous Heroes’ if the saved data from the demo version had a specific progress status and was transferred to the full version,
  • Fixed a bug in which the special effects of equipment in the storehouse would be lost if the saved data from the demo version was transferred to the full version,
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the player from re-entering the boss area of the main battlefield ‘Fall of the Corrupted Eunuch’ if both the player and Baishe had been defeated at the same time,
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the player from obtaining the trophy/achievement ‘Awakening of the Unscrupulous Hero’ during online multiplayer sessions, Note: After the update is applied, this trophy/achievement can be obtained by clearing any of the main or sub battlefields.
  • Fixed a bug that caused a crash when hitting enemies with the attacks ‘Falling Leaves’ and ‘Scattered Leaves’ while using dual halberds that had been decorated,
  • Fixed a bug that caused some graphics settings to be reset to the default settings each time the game was launched,
  • Fixed some other minor bugs.

Reading through those notes and we’re glad to see so many crash instances addressed. Game crashes were some of the most common complaints, and hard crashes in any game are usually seen as worse than simply poor performance.

As the patch is so new it’s unclear if this version will fix the vast amount of problems with the PC port, but what we can say is that reviews of the game have improved somewhat.

When we reported on the PC issues just a couple of days ago, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty had 10 327 reviews and only 39 percent of them were positive, resulting in a “Mostly Negative” review rating.

The number of reviews at the time of writing has grown to 12 030, and the percentage of positive ones has also increased to 41 percent.

Because of this Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty now stands with a “Mixed” review rating which, while not ideal, is much better than than anything preference with a negative.

Hopefully developer Team Ninja and publisher Koei Tecmo will continue to improve on the game, especially for players who already forked out money for this inferior launch version of the software.
