- Grimes tweeted out over the weekend that she is happy for any AI artists to use her voice in order to make a song.
- She added that she would split royalties 50/50 with any song that becomes a hit.
- As Grimes is not attached to a music label, she is currently able to let her voice be used by others with no apparent penalties.
Much has been made of the use of AI to create music that sounds like actual artists. This after streaming platforms were forced to remove an AI-generated track that sounded a lot like Drake and The Weeknd.
While it remains to be seen what will happen to the future of AI-generated music, it looks like some artists are quite happy for their voice to used in order to create new songs, with Grimes weighing in on the subject over the weekend.
On Sunday, the Canadian musician tweeted out that she was fine having AI artists use her voice, adding that any hit songs that result from the use of her voice won’t carry any penalties. On top of this, she said she would accept a 50/50 split when it comes to royalties.
It is unlikely that other artists will go the same route as Grimes, particular as she is not signed to a label currently, which is probably why the offer is on the table.
“Feel free to use my voice without penalty. I have no label and no legal bindings,” she said in the aforementioned tweet.
“I think it’s cool to be fused (with) a machine and I like the idea of open sourcing all art and killing copyright,” she continued. It is an idea that Grimes has explored in the past with her music, having revealed a digital recreation of herself for the release of her 2020 album, Miss_Anthropocene.
This latest step, therefore, feels like an evolution of that concept.
While Grimes has indicated her willingness to give her voice to the people, it will be interesting to see if AI music creators will want to adhere to the 50/50, should a hit song indeed be generated.
For now at least it looks like generative AI, while extremely exciting, continues to muddy the waters when it comes to content creation, and more importantly ownership.
