Ancient meme on Twitter sends Doge skyrocketing… to R1.74

  • Twitter has changed its famous blue bird logo into a PNG based on a meme from 2013.
  • What seems to be a belated April Fools joke has caused a rally in one of the smaller cryptocurrencies.
  • Musk is embroiled in a multi-million dollar lawsuit alleging he is part of a pyramid scheme to promote the very same cryptocurrency.

Remember in 2013 when doge was the new hotness? Yeah, us too. It was inescapable, and we spent a year sensibly chuckling at all the possible variations. That would have been prime time for Twitter to change its logo to the popular meme, but instead the social media giant waited a decade to make the joke.

Strike while the iron is ice cold.

Randomly this morning, the Twitter logo was changed to a custom PNG representing the doge meme, original seen in the cover image of this article, seemingly as a way for Chief Twit Elon Musk to curry favour among his followers.

We’ve written before about the Twitter owner customising the platform, with its more than 450 million users, on a whim, however, he sees fit. The move has been highly acclaimed by his followers and fans, but panned by the media with publications calling out the fact that Twitter’s verification system is still a mess after the latest update.

The move also had the additional consequence of influencing cryptocurrency investors to send the value of token Dogecoin skyrocketing. Musk is facing a $258 million racketeering lawsuit, alleging that he ran a pyramid scheme to promote Dogecoin.

Dogecoin’s explosion immediately after the Twitter logo was changed, according to Yahoo! Finance.

The Chief Twit’s lawyers said at the time that Musk’s vague statements about the token, such as “Dogecoin Rulz” and “no highs, no lows, only Doge” were “nothing unlawful” and were actually nothing more than a bit of a goof.

Meanwhile, Dogecoin has grown in value by around 32 percent sitting at around R1.74 as of time of writing. It was around R1.30 prior to the Twitter update, and has otherwise bounced up and down several times since, owing to the volatile nature of crypto.

While settling much higher than the last few months, this rally isn’t even among the coin’s largest which occurred on 7th May 2021 after Musk teased the cryptocurrency during his guest appearance on Saturday Night Live.

If anything, the inclusion of the meme proves that dumb jokes do in fact influence investors and in a big way too. But if the most followed man on Twitter wanted to make a big splash, he should have changed the logo to the Bitcoin B.
