Twitter’s owner is now the most followed person on Twitter

  • Elon Musk is officially the most followed person on Twitter.
  • The owner of the social media platform recently surpassed former US President Barack Obama as the most followed person.
  • At the time of writing, he has 133 068 709 followers on Twitter.

It is official, Elon Musk is now the most followed person on Twitter.

It makes sense given he is not only the owner of the platform after paying $44 billion for it last year, but has also christened himself as Chief Twit. Musk has overtaken former US President Barack Obama to achieve the feat, with both having more than 133 million followers.

At the time of writing, Musk has 133 068 709 followers, which just shades the 133 042 819 by Obama. Whether that top spot will exchange hands over the coming weeks and months remains to be seen, but Musk’s voice is amplified even further now that he is the most followed.

It is unclear how he will choose to wield this power, but Musk has long contended that his tweets do not reach enough people. So much so in fact, that reports suggested he had engineers at the platform work to ensure his tweets had further reach, with the recent Super Bowl an example of how the algorithm was being tinkered with.

As The Verge points out, Musk’s follower count has skyrocketed since his acquisition of the platform, with him having a little over 100 million at that time, racking up more than 30 million in less than six months.

That is likely the result in more people being interested in what he had to say given he’s directly involved with the fate of the platform, but a large majority may be morbid curiosity about how he will handle Twitter.

To date, the steps that have been taken are less than encouraging. Hopefully though, now that he is the most followed, he can focus on getting the platform to a more stable state.
