Sony job postings point to new PlayStation cloud gaming platform

  • Sony recently posted, and removed, 22 job listings to work on “cloud game streaming at PlayStation.”
  • This now sparks rumours that PlayStation is indeed entering the cloud gaming fray.
  • It is interesting giving the recent layoffs at the company, as well as the shuttering of Google Stadia.

Cloud gaming has proved difficult to get right. Late last year we saw Google Stadia shuttered, and Microsoft has remained mum on its dongle-powered xCloud game streaming.

The failures and hurdles of competitors do not seem to be deterring Sony from entering the cloud gaming fray, with a series of job listings pointing to the development of a new game streaming platform from PlayStation.

Found by The Verge, 22 posts in total were placed, and subsequently removed from the Sony portal this week, but not before some details could be gleaned. To that end the publication discovered that each of the job listings began like this:

“As a member of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Future Technology Group (FTG), you’ll have the opportunity to lead the charge in the cloud gaming revolution. FTG is at the forefront of putting console-quality video games on any device.”

The publication also took a closer look at one of the roles that Sony is sourcing talent for – a director of Product Management for Cloud Gaming.

Like the other 21 posts, the listing has since been removed, but an extract did ask, “Are you a ground-breaking innovator in the cloud streaming product space? Then you likely agree that Cloud Gaming is on its way to becoming a major part of the gaming industry.”

Along with the director, Sony appears to be on the lookout for:

  • Five senior platform engineers,
  • Three software engineers,
  • Two technical project managers,
  • One technical writer,
  • Four reliability engineers,
  • One DevOps engineer,
  • One junior network engineer,
  • One senior business intelligence analyst,
  • One security architect,
  • One network capacity planner.

While other details for the project are thin on the ground, it appears as if PlayStation may leverage AWS for this cloud gaming platform instead of Microsoft Azure, which is where Sony has explored potential cloud-related collaborations in the past.

It would also make sense for Sony to look outside of Microsoft for this solution, especially as it would be a direct competitor to xCloud, not to mention the two companies going at it over Microsoft’s desire to acquire Activision Blizzard.

Either way, if the job listings are to be believed, it looks like a PlayStation cloud gaming platform is in the works from Sony. Whether it comes to fruition and is a success where others have failed, is another question altogether
