• Google has finally revealed what their upcoming foldable device looks like after months of leaked purported images and rumours.
• The Google Pixel Fold will feature a horizontal, raised camera setup and will unfold like a book similar to Samsung’s Z Fold series of devices.
• Reports indicate that the device will cost around R31 000, but more details will be revealed at the Google IO event on 10th May.

After months of rumours and leaks, Google finally gave a first official look at their Pixel Fold smartphone, their first highly anticipated foldable device.

On 4th May, the official Google Pixel Twitter account posted a short video clip of the Pixel Fold in its folded and unfolded forms and a glimpse of the smartphone’s UI.

Additionally, Google Pixel has indicated that more details about the phone will be revealed at the Google IO event held on 10th May. So it seems we will finally get the goods on the Pixel Fold soon enough.

The clip shows that the Fold has a raised camera housing and a traditional folding form similar to the Samsung Z Fold devices. From what we can see of the unfolded form’s UI, the Pixel Fold is confirmed to have 5G connectivity and, of course, it is running Android.

Unlike Samsung’s foldable, however, the Pixel Fold’s camera array is horizontal, and the smartphone’s edges are shined steel. Only one colour has been revealed by Google as of yet, that being the eggshell white as seen above.

Other details are still scare, however, but according to CNBC, the Pixel Fold features the “most durable hinge on a foldable phone.” Usually, manufacturers of foldables will advertise the number of times a foldable smartphone can fold before the display begins to lose fidelity.

For example, Oppo’s Find N2 Flip is claimed to be durable after 400 000 folds.

The Pixel Fold will also reportedly be heavier than Samsung’s Z Fold 4 device at around 283 grams. It has a battery that Google says will last up to 24 hours, or up to 72 hours in a low power.

In terms of silicon, it is believed to house Google’s Tensor G2 chip, which is the same processor that launched in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro last year.

Finally, it is believed to cost $1 700, or ~R31 122.24. The local pricing is simply a formality, as no Google Pixels have ever been released in South Africa, despite Google’s presence in the country.

As such, it is unlikely that the Pixel Fold will hit local stores any time soon.
