Final Fantasy XVI sells more than 3 million copies in less than a week

  • Square Enix says it has sold three million copies of Final Fantasy XVI since it launched last week Friday.
  • It is an impressive feat given the game is a PS5-exclusive for now.
  • For context, Final Fantasy XV sold five million copies in its first week, but was available on the PS4 and Xbox One.

This past week has been a good one for Japanese game developer / publisher Square Enix, which has confirmed that its latest AAA title – Final Fantasy XVI – has sold three million copies since launching on 22nd June.

It is a rather impressive feat given the game remains a PS5 exclusive for now, with it still to be seen if Square Enix will port it over to other platforms or indeed Sony’s older generation of consoles. At the time of writing, however, it is solely available to purchase on the PS5.

Including both physical and digital sales, to put the three million figure in context, Final Fantasy XV amassed five million sold copies in its first week. While that is indeed more, it is worth noting that the 2016 title was made available on both the PS4 and Xbox One consoles. The figure was also surpassed by Final Fantasy VII Remake, which sold 3.5 million copies in its first three days on the PS4.

Regardless though, the milestone is solid, and does indeed show that despite supply chain and availability issues as a result of the pandemic, the PS5 is one of the most viable options when it comes to launching a AAA RPG.

As for our thoughts on the game, we’re in the process of reviewing it, and will be sharing the insights from our experience before this week’s end, so keep checking in on the Hypertext home page.
